What is Sling?

During the peak of its DVD-by-mail service in 2007, Netflix launched its streaming service with only a small portion of their DVD titles available to stream. This completely revamped media delivery, and other streaming service providers began jumping on the bandwagon. Five years later, Dish Network launched DishWorld, a premiere service offering over 50 international TV channels to subscribers. After a few years, DISH added some major cable channels to the service, such as several owned by both Disney and A&E. Once the catalogue grew and live TV was added, Dish did a total rebrand in 2015, changing their name to Sling TV, becoming the first app-based live TV service.

Dish initially marketed themselves as a complementary service to cable, as it could boost subscribers' media library. In 2017, Sling decided to take a different approach, pitching themselves as a cable-replacement service. Is this a worthy substitute for cable cutters though? Let's find out!

What Does Sling Have to Offer, and How Much Does It Cost?

Sling TV has two main packages available, Sling Orange and Sling Blue. Individually costing $35 each, but with a price tag of $50 when bundled together. The channels offerings are the main differences between each package.

Sling Blue offers over 45 channels, mostly focused on news and entertainment, with channels like E!, MSNBC, Fox News, SyFy, and TLC available.

Sling Orange has over 30 channels available, with a focus on sports and family programming, including channels like ESPN, ESPN2, ESPN3, Freeform, and the Disney Channel available. Sling Blue allows simultaneous streaming on up to three devices compared to Sling Orange's one device, and both packages offer 50 free hours of DVR. Neither service has contracts, either.

That's not all Sling has to offer, though, as there are a bunch of additional services you can opt-in for with varying prices. For instance, you can add an extra 200 hours of DVR for $5 per month, as well as a wide array of diverse channel bundles - consisting of channels like MTV, NBA TV, CNBC, Nicktoons, and TV Land - with ranging from $6 per month to $11 per month. You can also add single premium channels, like Showtime for $10 per month, Starz for $9 per month, and Epix for $5 per month.

Does Sling Offer any Discounts or Specials?

Sling is currently running an intro offer that gives you over 30 channels, over 80,000 movies and on-demand content, and 200 hours of DVR storage for $10 during your first month. After that, you can decide if you want to cancel, keep the subscription and pay the standard cost, or customize your package.

Sling is also running an offer that gets you a free AirTV Mini (retailing for $79.99), which is a streaming device built around and tailored to Sling’s service, if you pay for two months of Sling upfront.

How Can I Watch Sling?

Sling TV is available on a host of media devices, including Amazon Fire TV, Roku, Chromecast, TiVo Stream 4K, and Sling's tailored AirTV. Sling TV is also available on Xbox One, Xbox Series X, and Xbox Series X. The service also works with select LG smart TVs, as well as devices running Android TV. Sling TV is also available on iOS, Android, MacOS, Windows, and Linux.

Due to streaming services’ need for a reliable Internet connection, Sling recommends the following speeds.

3 Mbps or higher for mobile devices, such as tablets or smartphones
5 Mbps or higher for single- stream connected devices, like your home computer
25 Mbps or higher for households maintaining Internet usage on multiple devices
What Can You Watch on Sling?

Here are five of the most popular shows that can be watched on the Live streaming service:

Black Sails: Set in the early 18th century, roughly two decades before the events of Treasure Island, Captain Flint recruits a young John Silver as pirates fight to keep their way of life.

Shameless: Showtime’s long-running dramedy about a family of six kids and their alcoholic father, starring William H. Macy and Emmy Rossum.

The Good Place: Another hit comedy from Michael Schur with a now-famous twist in the first season, The Good Place follows four people and their journey into the afterlife as they navigate demons, robots, the inability the curse, the perils of Florida, and a lot of frozen yogurt.

Lexx: A group of people aboard the organic spaceship Lexx adventure through parallel universes.

Is Sling Worth Getting?

Sling's customization - the Orange and Blue packages, as well as the add-ons help make the service more attractive and versatile than other services which might offer more for your money. Sling can still be a bit pricey if you're combining the Orange and Blue packages, and especially if you're including add-ons. That being said, the $10 introductory offer makes it worth it to at least try the service out before you make any further commitments. Fortunately, there are no contracts, so even if you do opt for a more expensive package and decide you no longer want it, cancelling it shouldn't pose any issues.

Do keep in mind that cable providers offer bundle deals when shopping for Internet and/or a home telephone service, so it might be more cost-efficient to add cable to your existing plan, especially if you need Internet and/or home phone plan. Still, we say run some numbers and figure out what makes the most sense for you and your family.
