Suddenlink vs. Centurylink: Which is better?

Comparing service providers and their various offerings can be exhausting, especially when it comes down to deciding on which one you should opt in for. To assist you with this process, we will be sharing the specifics pertaining to two well-known service providers and breaking down their service options and prices. Hopefully this article will shed some light on which option may be best for you!

What should I know?

Suddenlink and Centurylink both offer Internet service with speeds ranging from 20-940 Mbps. Their packages range from roughly $35-$75 per month depending on which packaging you choose. Both companies also offer home phone services that you can bundle with your Internet service. Suddenlink doesn’t offer contracts and will even pay $500 to buy you out of your current contract. Centurylink typically does have contracts ranging from 12-36 months and they do charge early termination fees.

How does the set-up process work?

Suddenlink offers free installation if you choose one of their web deals. Their installation includes the set-up of one outlet, plus a $25 charge for each additional outlet. The installation includes one device set up wirelessly and the installation of up to two set-top boxes. It does not include any hardwiring of devices. If you choose to upgrade to the premium install, the price increases to $149 and includes local hardwiring for one of the following (TV, computers, gaming, and alarm systems). This premium option allows customers to have all their available devices set up wirelessly and they can get three or more set-top boxes installed.

Centurylink offers both self-installation as well as professional installation. Self-installation is only available in some areas and you will be charged $300 if your installation needs copper buried and $150 if you need aerial deliver. If you choose to do the professional installation, the technician will set up your modem as well as up to five of your devices for a one-time fee ranging from $99-$125.

How is the Internet service?

Suddenlink services an estimated 6.8 million people in nineteen states, offering both cable and fiber, whereas Centurylink offers Digital Subscriber Line (DSL) and fiber to approximately 48.3 million people in all 50 states, predominantly in Arizona, Colorado and Washington. DSL is one of the oldest Internet technologies, utilizing the phone line to transfer data and connect to the Internet. Fiber is made up of plastic and used mainly for Internet service. Fiber is usually considered to be superior due to its ability to provide high-bandwidth connections and quick uploads. Fiber is also less affected by slowdowns caused by high traffic. Unfortunately, it is not always an option in some areas due to high operating costs.

What are the Internet options?

Suddenlink offers 200 Mbps for $30 per month. If you are seeking quicker speeds, you can opt for the 400 Mbps plan for $40/month. Suddenlink's quickest option is 1 Gig (940 Mbps) for $50/month. Centurylink offers 20 Mbps via DSL for $49 in select areas. They offer either 100 Mbps for $49/month or 940 Mbps for $65/month if you are in their fiber areas.

What are the television options?

Suddenlink offers Core TV, consisting of 200+ channels for $58/month, Value TV which includes 225+ channels for $79.99/month. Select TV which has 290+ channels for $99.99/month and lastly Premier TV which includes 340+ channels plus HBO Max for $124.99/month.

Centurylink does not offer television directly but they do have partnerships with DIRECTV, AT&T TV and DISH which allow you to bundle Centurylink's Internet with their television options. Their typical TV packages has 150+ channels. They usually come with equipment fees, a contract, and a monthly cost of roughly $100/month. If you instead choose a streaming package, they have 60+ channels for $50/month without equipment fees or any contracts.

Do they offer mobile phone plans?

Suddenlink offers a mobile phone plan through Optimum Mobile, they charge $14/month per line for 1 GB of data, $22/month for 3 GB, and $45/month for unlimited data. They offer a nationwide network with 5G access and no multi-line commitments. Centurylink does not offer any mobile plans at this time.

What home telephone services do they offer?

Suddenlink offers Internet and television bundles that include a home telephone, this is typically the most affordable way to opt for phone service. Prices for all three services bundles ranges from  $50-$80 per/month depending on the amount of channels and  which Internet speed you get.

Centurylink offers both basic and unlimited phone plans. The basic plan allows just local calls, whereas the unlimited phone plan includes local calls, long-distance calls to over a hundred countries, as well as discounted calls to Mexico and Latin American countries. Extra features are also available such as call waiting, caller ID, 3-way calling, call rejection, call forwarding, call return, speed dial etc.  The basic plan is typically $24.25/month and the unlimited phone plan is usually $60/month.

What are the different types of bundles?

Suddenlink offers several individual television, Internet, and phone plans as well as various bundles. Options include Internet 200, Basic TV (50+ channels), and phone for $50/month. Internet 200, Core TV, and Phone for $60/month. Internet 400, Unlimited Data, Core TV and Phone for $70/month.  Lastly, you can opt in for 1 Gig Unlimited Data, Core TV, and Phone for $80/month. All these Core TV bundles include 200+ channels. In addition, they have bundles to choose from that include only two services in case you are not interested in Internet, TV, and a home phone.

If you're interested in getting a bundle through Centurylink, you will need to opt for television through one of their partners. For just Internet and phone, you will only need Centurylink's services. The Internet and phone plan includes 100 Mbps Internet and unlimited nationwide calling for $85/month. If you would like television, you can bundle DIRECTV Choice All-Included and Centurylink Internet. This includes 185+ channels and 100 Mbps Internet. For this bundle, you will need to combine billing (paperless) and opt for a 24-month agreement. This plan is $118/month and goes up in price the second year. If you would like Direct TV Choice All-Included combined with Centurylink Internet and phone, with all the same specifications as above, it is $154.99/month and includes a 24-month agreement and an increase in price the second year.

So which is the best deal?

Both Suddenlink and Centurylink offer reliable Internet and home phone options. As for television, Suddenlink has several options whereas Centurylink requires the assistance of their partners for these services. Lastly, you can get mobile phone service through Optimum Mobile, a product of Suddenlink, but you cannot get mobile phone service through Centurylink currently. Internet: Suddenlink offers 200 Mbps for $30 per month. Centurylink offers only either 20Mbps (DSL) or 100 Mbps (Fiber) for $49/month.

Television:, Suddenlink offers Core TV, consisting of 200+ channels for $58/month whereas Centurylink does not offer television unless you combine their Internet and/or phone services with DIRECTV, AT&T TV, or DISH.

Mobile: Optimum Mobile offers phone lines starting at $14/month. Centurylink does not currently offer mobile phone service.

Home Telephone: Suddenlink has various bundles which include a home telephone, which make their service deals all-around affordable. Centurylink typically charges $24.25/month for local calls with no Internet or television included.

Bundle: Suddenlink offers Internet 200, Core TV, and Phone for $60/month whereas a bundle through Centurylink with no television, just Internet (100 Mbps) and nationwide calling is $85/month.
